Melbourne Water in partnership with Statewide River and Stream Management have developed training in Site Environmental Awareness for site managers, personnel, contractors, consultants and developers working on or near Melbourne Water Assets.

Prior to commencing any work on or near Melbourne water waterways, channels, wetlands or bio-retention systems, the contractor is to complete Site Environmental Awareness Training ( SEAT) and be issue their "Green Card". Prior to commencement of any works on site.

Course Outline

The aim of this training program is to provide participants with the practical skills and knowledge in soil erosion and sediment control practices that improve asset management and minimise the amount of sediment entering the waterways.

Course Objectives

Course participants who successfully complete the course shall gain the following skills and knowledge:

  • Understand legal and moral obligations not to pollute waterways.
  • Appreciate the issues associated with not adequately implementing environmental management practices.
  • Understand your responsibilities for undertaking environmental management, including their legislative responsibilities, contractual responsibilities and their responsibilities in the event of an incident.
  • Make informed decisions on how to select, implement and maintain environment protection measures in the workplace.

Other information

Upon completion participants will receive a personalised PVC training card with their photograph to produce on Melbourne Water work sites if required.

This course delivers the competency, AHCSAW203- Conduct Erosion and Sediment Control from the nationally accredited AHC16 training package.  Holmesglen Institute in partnership with Statewide River and Stream Management issue the nationally accredited competency upon successful completion of the course.

  • An understanding of responsibilities for undertaking environmental management, including legislative and incident related.  Outlining the Federal and State Legislative requirements for site works, in particular the SEPP’s (waters of Vic), relevant regulations, the Environmental Management Guidelines and local government requirements.  It emphasises to the participants the legislative requirements under the Planning and Environment Act (Victorian Planning Provisions: 56.08) and the EPA Act Victoria
  • Determining the vulnerability of a site and the risks associated particularly in relation to erosion and sedimentation parameters and their effects on water quality.
  • Skills to effectively plan for environmental management through the use of the Site Environmental Descriptions Kit and skills to make informed decisions selection, implement and maintain environment protection measures in the workplace
  • Principles of erosion and sediment management, waste management and chemical management on construction sites and their environmental impacts
  • Environmental Protection Measures – including preventative measures, control measures and contingencies including an up to date perspective of what is happening in the industry with erosion control measures

Course Outlines

This 30 Minute training course is designed to go through your workplace spill kits and instruct workers on the products and their use.  Each course is customised to your workplace equipment and internal procedures.

Course Objectives

This course will look at;

  • Basic understanding of the procedures to follow when there is a spill event
  • Hazard and risk identification in relation to spills and the OHS issues that need to be addressed
  • PPE and Site safety preparation and equipment that are required for use
  • Stopping and controlling the spill
  • Identification and correct use of the spill response items on site including the spill kit
  • Clean up techniques and remedial actions
  • Disposal of contaminated material criteria
  • Follow up and reporting requirements

Course Outcomes

Upon completion participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Prior to delivery of this training we would require a site tour and discussion with your team members to familiarise our trainers with the current site spill equipment and resources for type, size and suitability for response.  This allows us to fully customise the presentation and make it relevant to your work site.

Water Quality Analysis Training for the Construction Industry

Do your staff need training in water quality analysis?

Do they understand the legislative requirements in order to discharge water from site?

This course has been developed in response to student’s feedback from our Green Card Training Courses.

Target Audience:

Environmental Officers, Project Managers, Site Supervisors, field personnel, foreman,   Surveillance officers, council environmental and local law officers.

Course Objectives

  • Understand what water quality and the parameters used to measure it
  • Understand the importance of selecting sites for monitoring – taking into consideration OH&S principles and
  • work site parameters
  • Ability to survey water bodies to assess their present condition using appropriate sampling techniques
  • Understanding of Legislative responsibilities in regards to water quality discharge from worksites
  • Identify areas where water degradation or pollution exists and identify the cause or sources

Topics Covered;

  • Water quality and aquatic ecosystems
  • Water quality monitoring and site selection
  • Instrument calibration, quality control
  • Physical and Chemical testing including; flow, temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity, pH and dissolved oxygen
  • Legislative objectives for water quality in Victoria
  • What quality water can I discharge from my work site?

Participants will gain experience in using a range of manual and electronic water quality measuring equipment for onsite measurements.  Upon completion participants will receive a certificate of participation.
